TL DR: No, you cannot EASILY control two DSLRs from one machine. *I brought this up to a few Canon reps at a conference and they all chuckled and agreed with me how bad it is, good people IMO your best bet would be to start there. I cannot express how much I love Gphoto, it's fast and well documented ( cough cough look Canon cough). I digress, of all attempts I made, I still could not achieve decent results in fact the guy who worked on this before did it better with a live view stream with ~500-1000ms delay at around 10fps. The only way to be sure is to limit connectivity to one camera and assume any new stream comes from the same camera*. These streams at times will sever and reconnect rapidly and when this happens there is no way for the host to determine whether the new stream came from camera A or camera B. The one thing the documentation is very clear on is that these streams are not unique to one camera (not sure if (USB or EDSDK limitation).

Canon cameras connect to the host computer running it's utility, when live view mode is triggered (remotely) some poorly documented software magic happens and the host & camera open a video stream giving you a very responsive remote live view. Now the long(ish) answer, this pertains mostly to Canon's EOS Digital Software Development Kit (EDSDK) as Nikon's is limited feature wise and confusing as hell to work with (personal opinion from 2 years ago, it could be better now). Sadly, the short answer is no, you cannot have two USB video streams on the same host machine (as per Canon EOS SDK documentation). So I guess if it happens that the sensor overheats I will know about it.Interestingly enough, I spent a solid year of my masters degree (almost done) trying to accomplish this goal. I figure that after messing around with different combinations of lenses on the camera I should be able to rig up something that will work nicely assuming the video quality is half decent to start with.Īs far as overheating goes, I found this in the troubleshooting section of the manual:Įrror message: Camera overheated. 25-200x is what they seem to have and in order to work for my purposes I need to have the coin at least six inches from the camera in order to use tools, which could be a problem with one of these standard microscopes as it seems that many of them only focus well if you are almost on top of the item you are focusing on. I need 5 - 15x magnification and even the usb microscopes you can buy usually don't go that low. What I am planning to use it for is cleaning ancient coins. IMHO useful for a photo-booth or model feedback but not good enough for macro and other critical modes.Awesome.
